MONGOLIA
I went to Mongolia both to fish for large taimen and the rare long-toothed grayling
(both of which I caught) in N. Mongolia, and to visit the Kazakh eagle hunters of western
Mongolia. I traveled around western Mongolia with my guide, Od, visiting part of his
family as well as riding with the eagle hunters after the October Eagle Festival had ended.
As luck would have it most people in Mongolia still speak Russian, so I was able to chat
with my subjects much of the time, though a few times I was dependent on a translation
from Russian to Mongolian or Kazak.
