CHINA
Along China’s Silk Road
These photographs were taken primary in what is now politically western China, the Xinjiang area from Urmuchi, Turpan and Kashgar. This area is traditionally Central Asia, populated by the Uyghurs who are a Turkic people with their own language, traditions and architecture. Since I had lived in Afghanistan I found this a fascinating and photogenic region. Unfortunately neither English nor Russian, nor the smattering of Persian I retain were of help in talking to most people there. It made me wish I’d learned Turkish.
